Andy Cheseldine

Chair of the Board of Trustees, Representing Capital Cranfield

Andy Cheseldine joined the Trust Board in 2017 and is the independent chair of trustees.

Andy is renowned for his deep knowledge and wealth of expertise in the pensions industry and has accrued more than 35 years of experience in consulting on defined benefit and defined contribution arrangements. His inclusion in the Top 50 People in Pensions Awards in 2015 and the Top 25 most influential investment consultants in the last five years is a testament to his reputation. Anna Eagles

Trustee Director, Representing Law Debenture

Anna is an independent corporate Trustee. Anna joined the Trust Board in January 2018. She is a pensions actuary by background and a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, with 22 years' experience advising trustees and employers. Before joining Law Debenture, she was with Willis Towers Watson Ltd. Anna's experience includes handling the winding-up of a DC arrangement with many investment options including with-profits funds; feasibility analyses of wind-ups of legacy DC arrangements with unit-linked and with-profits investments and bulk transfers of DC to Master Trusts.


Kate Jones

Trustee Director

Kate joined the board in August 2018. She has many years' experience within the investment market having headed up teams at both Schroders and Blackrock. She is currently a non-executive director of the Pension Protection Fund which acts as the ‘lifeboat’ for final salary pension schemes.

She was appointed as Chair of the Board of Trustees for the charity RedSTART in 2016 which aims to give access to quality financial education to young people. She is also an executive coach.


David Brown

Trustee Director

David joined the Trust Board in October 2018. He has 30 years experience in the pension and investment industry in the UK and Internationally working as an operator and consultant. During this period David has worked for two of the Big Four consulting firms and more recently at Tesco where he was the UK and ROI Pensions and Payroll Manager. His broad experience includes DB and DC pensions, risk management and internal controls, change management including IT system migrations, member engagement, data privacy and governance. David is an Associate of the Pensions Management Institute and Chartered Insurance Institute. He also has an MBA from the Bradford Management Centre and holds a number of Professional Trustee appointments.



Stephen Murphy

Chairman of the Board

Stephen began his career as a chartered management accountant, before moving through many notable roles and achievements, including succeeding Sir Richard Branson as Group CEO at Virgin. Between 2005 and 2011, he managed the entire Virgin portfolio of companies, reshaping the business and increasing its diversification across more than 30 countries.

He has held a number of equally challenging and impressive roles ,including
Chairman of OVO (a major UK utility provider), Non-Executive Chairman of GYG plc (an AIM-listed provider of Superyacht services), Chairman of London & Capital (an international wealth manager), Non-Executive Director at The Business Growth Fund (a £2.5bn Investment Fund specialising in SME investment) and Independent Director of Get Living London Ltd (the UK’s largest provider of build-to-rent residential developments).


Andrew Evans

Chief Executive, Co-Founder & Board Member

Andrew founded Smart Pension with Will Wynne in late 2014. Their aim was to build an easy-to-use platform which made pension auto enrolment a simple, quick and cost-effective process for both employers and employees alike. In terms of the numbers of companies using the platform, Smart Pension is now the largest commercial master trust in the country. The next stage of the company's expansion is a focus on working with some of the largest schemes in the UK, ensuring that their members can enjoy the benefits of greater pension scheme functionality.
Alongside Smart Pension, he is currently a school governor and also an ambassador for NESTA's Open Up Challenge, helping fintechs and data scientists across the world to deliver open banking transformation. The project was selected by the Competition and Markets Authority as a remedy to shake up retail banking.


Will Wynne

Managing Director, Co-Founder & Board Member

Will started his career with five successful years in private equity in the City. He then joined the digital marketing team at eBay UK as one of the company's first UK employees. During his three years there, eBay grew from 3m members to nearly 18m, acquired PayPal, Skype, Shopping.com and Gumtree. Whilst at eBay, Will initiated and led the project that launched eBay for Charity in the UK, raising 100s of millions for charity.

He then went on to found one of the UK's most disruptive ecommerce businesses, overcoming the many scaling challenges of taking a technology-led gifts business from a standing start to profitably selling over £100m of product in a decade.

His particular expertise and passion lie in frictionless self-service platforms, scaling, innovation and everything digital and online.


Jamie Fiveash

Chief Operating Officer & Board Member

Jamie is a qualified accountant turned strategist and business leader. He has over 26 years' experience in the financial services industry, during which time he has performed in a variety of senior and executive roles across many business disciplines. Before joining Smart Pension, he was Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer at B&CE, where he was instrumental in the design and delivery of The People's Pension, which has over four million members. He has been a Non-Executive Director of the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association for the last three years and sits on a number of committees, including being Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee.


Claire Altman

Chief Corporate Officer & Board Member

As Chief Corporate Officer at Smart Pension, Claire heads up a department covering legal and regulatory affairs and governance. She took on the role following three years as Chair of the Smart Pension Master Trust. Claire has a legal background and, after a law degree at Cambridge, qualified as a barrister before moving into the City. She then joined Sacker & Partners, a law firm specialising in pensions, and became a partner there in 2007.



Michelle Darracott

Chief Strategy Officer

Michelle is an accomplished senior leader with more than 20 years' experience in the financial services sector, in both strategic and commercial capacities and most recently with Legal & General Investment Management. Her expertise spans strategic planning, M&A, proposition design, distribution, business development and negotiation. She is a member of many steering committees, is a fellow of the Institute of Actuaries and has a First Class degree in Economics.


Matthew Lea

Financial Director

Matthew is Financial Director of Smart Pension. He has a multi-sector and international background, covering financial services (Capital One and American Capital private equity), technology (thetrainline and Calypso Technology), consumer telecoms (BT and MVNO) and energy (Shell Oil). He has lived and worked internationally, has an LLB in English and French Law and qualified as an ACMA accountant in 2001.


Dan Mclaughlin

Director of International

Dan heads Smart Pension's international unit and has recently undertaken detailed global research to indentify the first opportunities for Smart Pension's scalable platform overseas. He has a background in domestic and international public policy, with a focus on helping business to scale rapidly both in the UK and internationally. Having advised ministers for over a decade, Dan has finely tuned diplomatic skills and a huge depth of knowledge and contacts in both government and commerce.


Tim Phillips

Director of Global Clients

Tim has 14 years' experience in the pensions industry. At Smart Pension, his role has focused on the evolution of the product, to build the company's broader DC pensions proposition beyond a pure auto enrolment offering. His team works with Smart Pension's larger corporate clients, from initial proposal through to implementation.

Before joining Smart Pension, Tim was instrumental in the creation of another leading UK Master Trust and was also previously head of auto enrolment consulting at a FTSE-100 company. He is a Fellow of the Pensions Management Institute (PMI) as well as an elected member of the PMI Council and Chair of the PMI's Risk and Assurance Committee.


Paul Budgen

Director of Business Development

Paul has 25 years' experience with leading providers of Workplace Pension Schemes. Before joining Smart Pension he was Director of Business Development at NEST, helping 6.5m members save for their retirement. He has specialised in leading sales, client management and marketing teams in both the creation and distribution of DC schemes, through intermediate and direct channels to corporate and trustee clients. He is a member of the Chartered Insurance Institute.


Darren Agombar

Chief Investment Officer

Darren is Chief Investment Officer, responsible for the design of Smart Pension's investment strategy, and has recently stepped down from being a designated trustee and member of the investment subcommittee. He has more than 30 years of financial market experience, spanning investment banking and fund management in London, Dubai and Tokyo. Darren has studied behavioural finance and gained expertise in its application to investing and understanding investor behaviour.


Darren Philp

Director of Policy & Comms

Darren is well known in the pension industry for his work lobbying for change in pensions and financial services for the benefit of savers and scheme members. His industry experience comes from previous roles at The People's Pension, the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association and HM Treasury, where he was closely involved in the design of the UK's flagship auto enrolment programme. Darren continues to contribute to the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association with thought leadership and policy development work, and is currently Vice Chair of its Master Trust committee. He sits on the PMI External Affairs Committee, is a governor of the independent Pensions Policy Institute and recently chaired the pensions dashboard ABI-sponsored consumer research group.


Richard Dallas

Head of Strategic Partnerships

Richard brings to Smart Pension a wealth of knowledge and commercial experience from financial and business services. His product experience covers SME and commercial banking and retirement and insurance products across UK, European and global remits. Richard has held senior commercial positions at HSBC, Aegon/TransAmerica. Barclays Bank, Lloyds Bank and Charles Schwab. He brings a track record of running complex P&L units, driving business growth, designing and executing major business transformation propositions, developing global partnerships and successfully launching new platforms.



Michael Watkins

Head of Pension Proposition

Michael has over 16 years' industry experience, gained across a range of roles. As Head of Proposition Development at Smart Pension, he is responsible for the continuous development of the Smart's commercial operations, through the design and delivery of industry-leading and consumer-centric solutions. He is also Chair of the Pension Administration Standards Association (PASA) DC Governance Working Group and NextGen Committee.


Sue Whittington

Director of Operations

Sue is an accomplished Director of large and complex operational functions, with over 20 years' experience in financial services and an in-depth knowledge of individual and workplace savings and pensions. Before joining Smart Pension, she was head of distribution services at Zurich Insurance. She has made a substantial contribution to evolving and connecting strategy and brand and in creating robust commercial delivery models, whilst operating in highly regulated environments.

Sue has always had a professional focus on building lasting relationships between customers, intermediaries and stakeholders, combined with a passion for blending the success of the business with that of the people who deliver it.

Ian Digby

Ian Digby

Head of Regulation

Ian worked at The Pensions Regulator from early 2013 as an industry liaison manager for Master Trusts, supporting them through automatic enrolment, the development of the Master Trust Assurance Framework (MAF) and new authorisation and regulatory requirements.


Eamon Mulholland

Head of Special Projects

Having worked in financial services for more than 35 years, Eamon brings considerable industry experience to Smart Pension. He has held a variety of senior leadership roles, including Chief Operating Officer roles in a number of different business units in Lloyds Bank, where he was instrumental in building new business areas in mortgages, financial markets, capital management, risk management and operations. At Smart Pension, Eamon has a strategic role to help the company ensure that its processes and governance are optimised for efficiency. As the firm experiences rapid growth, he is also leading on a number of strategic projects, including Smart Pension's regulatory submission for Master Trust Authorisation. A member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and APMP qualified, Eamon also has a degree in Economics and History and a Masters in Strategic Management.



Sam Barton

Chief Technology Officer

Sam has spent the last 20 years working in technology, with a specific focus on Rest-based APIs and related applications. Working with cross-discipline development teams, he has built high-demand and scalable applications in environments that are both regulated and finance-focused. He has gained a wealth of experience in the design and delivery of purpose-built platforms which disrupt markets and provide a superior customer experience, whilst working with a best-in-class approach to application development.

Martin F

Martin Freeman

Head of Technology Product

Martin is known as a pre-eminent pensions technology leader and is responsible for Smart Pension's products in this field. He has delivered administration platforms that now manage the pensions of some 21m scheme members, and created innovative tools that help people make better choices about their retirement savings.

Before joining Smart Pension in 2017, Martin headed the technology development and pensions strategy for leading organisations, and pioneered auto enrolment policy and processes for some of the country's largest employers.

Kate Ross

Kate Ross

Head of Programme Delivery Group

Kate has held numerous high-level roles over the last 20 years, delivering large scale projects and programmes while working for a diverse range of companies including Nomura, Tullet & Tokyo, Morgan Stanley, Vodafone, A&O and Linklaters. Her most notable award was at Vodafone for the first product to connect a laptop to the mobile network.

Since joining the company in 2017, Kate has been responsible for delivering Smart Pension's high quality digital and innovative products for our customers and partners.


Dr. Harry Brignull

Head of UX Innovation

Harry has a PhD in Cognitive Science, specialising in User Experience. His work has pushed forward many of the world's leading digital ventures, from the award-winning Gov.uk to Spotify.
