Shop around and book a Pension Wise appointment
It’s important that you shop around to find the best option for your personal circumstances and income goals. It’s a big decision, so it’s worth comparing what each provider can offer.
Pension Wise is a free government service that offers impartial guidance to people over the age of 50 on how to take their pension savings.
Pension Wise will cover a range of options to help you understand the decisions you face and will tell you about the ways you can take your pension savings. They can explain what’s tax-free and what’s not, and how much you’ll get after tax.
You can arrange either a telephone or face to face appointment. You can visit their website or call them on 0800 138 3944 to arrange an appointment.
Tools within your Smart Pension account
Combine your pensions - our simple online tool helps you find and combine your old pensions into one - making things easier for yourself when you decide how to manage your income in retirement.
Pension calculator - estimate how much you’ll need for the lifestyle you’d like in retirement. Add other pensions and see what you’re likely to get from the State Pension, too.
Review your retirement age - if you’re not ready to take your pension savings and want to keep them invested for longer, it's a good idea to make sure you keep your expected retirement age updated, so this can be reflected in your investment strategy (if you’re in our default fund).
What if I'm still unsure about the best option for me?
If you’re still unsure about your options, we recommend that you speak to a financial adviser. You can find one in your local area by visiting MoneyHelper's help and advice page.
Please note that financial advisers will usually charge a fee for their services. However, a good financial adviser will help you to make decisions that are best for you.
You can also delay taking your pension savings by changing your planned retirement age. You can do this by signing in to your Smart Pension account.
