How we calculate your pension health score
Your pension health score is an illustration, not a guarantee. It’s designed to give you a helpful estimate of how prepared you might be for retirement, based on standard assumptions about the future. The score ranges from 0 to 100 and is based on four key factors, using assumptions about your future lifestyle rather than your earnings today.
Your pension health score is a forward-looking estimate based on standard assumptions about investment growth, inflation and retirement age. It is not a guaranteed outcome and should not be taken as financial advice.
Your actual retirement income may be higher or lower depending on future investment performance, contribution levels, charges, tax rules and your personal circumstances.
Your age
The earlier you start planning, the more time your savings have to grow. Your age helps determine how much time you have until retirement, which in turn influences your score.
Current pension savings
The amount you’ve already saved for retirement is a key part of your pension health score. We compare your savings against typical benchmarks for your age to see how you’re doing.
These benchmarks are based on your salary and stage of your career: early savers are expected to have smaller amounts, while those closer to retirement should have larger pots to support their desired lifestyle. A commonly cited rule of thumb suggests that by your 30s, you might aim to have roughly one year’s salary saved, rising to three to four times your salary by your 50s.
Monthly contributions
Consistency is key, no matter where you are on your retirement journey, and regular contributions are key. We consider how much you're contributing towards your pension and how it aligns with recommended levels.
Retirement Living Standards
We also consider the UK’s Retirement Living Standards of ‘Minimum’, ‘Moderate’, and ‘Comfortable’, to show whether your current savings are likely to give you the lifestyle you want in retirement. This gives you a clear picture of where you stand and highlights areas where small changes now can make a big difference later.
How we work out your score
Your pension health score is a projection based on standard assumptions, including expected long-term investment growth and inflation. It does not include any State Pension entitlement and does not take into account other savings, investments or pensions you may have.
The score is intended as an illustrative guidance only and is not personalised financial advice.
